YouTube-to-MIDI glide test

Does YouTube to MIDI preserve pitch bends?

No—not as pitch-bend data in the current converter. A controlled five-second glide from A4 to B4 became six fixed MIDI notes and zero pitch-bend events. Use the result as a note draft, then draw or record the bend again in your DAW.

Make a note draft

This result describes one reproducible local test of the current converter. It does not predict every audio-to-MIDI system or every performance.

What we tested

We generated a five-second, 22,050 Hz mono WAV containing one sine tone. Its frequency rose continuously from 440 Hz to 493.883 Hz, a two-semitone move from A4 to B4. No public recording or performer was used.

The file went through the local converter at its default sensitivity and minimum-note-length settings. The browser completed without console errors and exported a 103-byte MIDI file.

Why a smooth bend becomes stepped notes

The current export path sends detected notes to the MIDI writer. It does not supply a continuous pitch curve. The detector therefore represented the glide with note names at semitone positions, including several short A4 fragments near the beginning.

Standard MIDI files can carry pitch-bend data. The MIDI Association describes Pitch Bend Change as a channel message with fine enough resolution for changes to appear continuous. The tested file simply contained none of those events.

How to rebuild the expression in a DAW

  1. Keep the intended notes. Replace the fragments with the musical start and destination notes you actually want.
  2. Set the bend range. Match the instrument's pitch-bend range to the interval; this test spans two semitones.
  3. Draw or record the curve. Add a rising pitch-bend envelope over the sustained note instead of leaving a staircase of retriggered notes.
  4. Check the return to center. Reset the bend before the next unbent note so later notes stay in tune.

What about vibrato and guitar slides?

Do not assume that a note-only draft preserves those gestures. Vibrato repeatedly moves around a center pitch, while a guitar slide moves between fretted pitches without necessarily retriggering the note. If the exported file has no pitch-bend events, recreate the movement with pitch automation or an expressive performance controller.

What this test proves—and what it does not

It confirms the exact notes, timings, file size, and pitch-bend count for one generated two-semitone glide in the current site converter. It does not measure transcription accuracy across singers, guitars, noisy recordings, larger intervals, or other tools.

If your issue is unrelated extra fragments, use the measured cleanup guide. For simultaneous pitches, see the controlled chord test. If playback uses the wrong sound, follow the instrument and playback guide.
